Obituary for Dorothy J. Grimes (Leonard)


Dorothy J. Grimes, 86, of Freeport died on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at FHN Memorial Hospital of a stroke.
Dorothy was born in Saginaw, Mich., on July 1, 1926, the daughter of Frederick and Belvia (Vanest) Leonard. She graduated from Gladwin High School in Gladwin, Mich., in 1944, and from the University of Michigan School of Nursing with a Bachelor’s degree.
She married Harvey J. Grimes on July 1, 1950, in Gladwin, and then moved to suburban Philadelphia, where she worked as a nurse in Presbyterian Hospital. She also worked many years as a school nurse.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Harvey of Freeport; her daughters, Deb (Joe) Blair of Winslow and Judy (Ken) Moore of Freeport; son, Fred Grimes of Durango, Colo.; grandchildren, Eric (Kate) Blair, Amy (Chad) Doobay, Marc (Jessie) Blair, Kevin (Becky) Moore, and Megan Moore; eight great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; her sister, Mary Gostiaux; many nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Jon Acker.
She was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, a member of the Faith Workers Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of PEO and a dedicated volunteer at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.
Dorothy shared her lively spirit and optimism with her family and many friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Grimes will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, at Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her memory.
