Obituary for Wayne R. Burd

WAYNE BURD, 94 FREEPORT - Wayne Burd, 94, of Freeport died at 1:12 a.m. Monday, May 25, 2015, at Stephenson Nursing Center, with his son, Steve by his side. Wayne was a native of Durand, IL and moved to Freeport with his family in 1950. Wayne served in the Navy during WWII on the battleship USS Pennsylvania in the Pacific Theatre. Wayne and his wife, Opal Long Burd (who passed in 2007) were both active in real estate construction, development and sales. Wayne built many beautiful custom homes in the Freeport area and was also a Wausau Homes dealer in both Stephenson and Carroll counties. Wayne was an extremely talented artist and was well known for his wood carvings. He was also a model airplane builder and pilot and was a member of the RC Modelers Club here in Freeport. Wayne is survived by his three children, Steve Burd of Grand Canyon, AZ, Marcia Sankey of Phoenix, AZ and Jeff (Mollie) Burd of Freeport; six grandchildren, Niles Sankey and Adam (Sheila) Burd, both of Seattle, WA, Anna Mae (Diogo) Almeida of Mesa, AZ, Jenna (Michael) Gorsline of Aurora, IL, Elyse (Abel) Aguilar of Queen Creek, AZ and Justine Burd of Fairbanks, AK; as well as 3 great- grandchildren. Visitation will be at from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Walker Mortuary. Wayne will be interred with his wife at Oakland Cemetery on Saturday with a private family ceremony. Friends and family are asked to donate to their favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
