Obituary for Phyllis Roodhouse (Hettinger)

PHYLLIS ROODHOUSE, 90 FREEPORT - Phyllis Roodhouse passed away at age 90 on October 22, 2015. She was born in Freeport on July 31, 1925, to Paul and Lily Hettinger. On September 1, 1946, she married Ralph Stocker, who died March 4, 1974. She married Charles Roodhouse on May 5, 1979. She was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church (now United Presbyterian) where she served as a deacon for many years. She worked at Micro Switch during World War II, was the last proofreader at the Freeport Journal Standard, and then served as a word processor at Crum and Forster Insurance. She served the community in many ways: Den Mother for five years, Volunteer at Freeport Memorial Hospital for 28 years, and Volunteer at Freeport Area Council of Churches (FACC), including PADS and the Household Room, for many years. Together, she and Charles delivered Meals on Wheels for 24 years. She enjoyed a variety of leisure pursuits including card games, 16 years of "wintering" in Florida, watching the TV programs "Wheel of Fortune", "Golden Girls" and "Keeping Up Appearances" and appreciating and enjoying music including playing the piano and her old pump organ. For many, many years, she kept a series of diaries and recently enjoyed reading them to Charles. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Charles; three sons, Steven (Cory), Joel (Dawn), and Mark (Jackie) Stocker; and her sister, Lorraine Houghton. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; three step-children; four step-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter as well as her parents, first husband and two sisters. Wake and visitation will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 25, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, 504 North Walnut Avenue, Freeport, Illinois 61032, 815.233.0613. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, October 26, beginning at United Presbyterian Church, 302 West Stephenson Street in Freeport, and onward to Oakland Cemetery at 2619 West Pearl City Road in Freeport.
