Leona B. Volkers, 91, of Freeport, died Sunday, November 8,2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital. She was born in LaFayette County, WI on May 3, 1918, the daughter of William and Ethel (Martin) Jackson. Leona was a homemaker. She married Rollin Volkers on October 26, 1940 in Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa. He died on December 23, 1979. She was also preceded n death by her longtime companion Gordon Engle. Leona was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, the Elks Lodge and the YWCA. She volunteered for 10 years at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Family was very important to her and she enjoyed to travel. Survivors include her son, Brian (Mary) Volkers of Overland Park, KS; her daughter, Sylvia (Donald) Andersen of Surprise, AZ; four grandchildren, Justin and Jared Volkers of Overland Park, KS, Richard Andersen of Megalia, CA and Robert (Sandra) Andersen of Napa, CA; one great grandchildren Stormi Sky Andersen; Preceded in death her parents, husband and granddaughter Evelyn. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday November 13, 2009 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport with Rev. Bill Blomberg officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial has been established in her memory.
