MILWAUKEE - Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. July 28 at the Morningside plot of Freeport's Oakland Cemetery to remember Florence Irene Staas Irwin in their hearts and place her earthly remains to rest.
The daughter of Pansy and Walter Staas, BORN Dec. 12, 1919, she also was related by birth to the Snyder, Thoman, Schubert, Deery and LaBudde families of Lancaster Township and by marriage to the Irwin, Sisler and Law families of Freeport and Mount Carroll.
Florence and Robert Gail Irwin graduated from Freeport High School and married in 1941 in Lincoln, Neb. World War II took Robert into the service, along with his brother, William D., cousin, Glenn Sisler Jr., and brother-in-law, Robert E. Burnhart. Sisters-in-law, Ellen Franke Irwin and Margaret Irwin Barnhart, along with dear friend, Maxine Sisler, joined Florence as homemakers and young mothers, grateful for the end of the war.
Florence, Robert and their daughter, Gayle, settled in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1950. Her artistry in homemaking, effortless "green thumb," and stellar cooking created beauty and comfort for her family and guests. When Gayle left for college, she joined the care team on the orthopedic floor of Columbia Hospital. As secretary, for more than 18 years, her attention to detail, compassion, and ever sweet smile blessed many patients and families.
Faith strengthened her days among us. Her church home was Kenwood United Methodist where she was always welcomed into the circle. She joyfully greeted the carolers even at her bedside.
She died peacefully at on May 15, 2007, at the family home, leaving Gayle McCoy; three grandchildren, Matthew (Nancy) McCoy, David Frederick McCoy and Margaret (Charles) Adams; and four great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Olivia Rose and Samuel McCoy, and Elizabeth Mackenzie Adams.
